What better way to relax and to take thing a little easier than to start growing vegetables
As the prospect of a retirement away from the daily running of Poplar Nurseries loomed, Martin Cowan decided he would re-kindle his original passions for growing vegetables and cut flowers. Obviously, what better way to relax and to take thing a little easier than to start growing vegetables on a half acre plot of land!
Not to be content with some “back to basics” growing on a small part of the site Martin has set about forming his very own “Good Life”, complete with two Polytunnels for protected crops, a netted brassica and leaf area (50m x 20m), an area for a dozen chickens, pigs, and five bee hives from which about 80 jars of honey are produced.
With the intention of growing a few basic vegetables for home Martin now grows enough fresh produce to supply the “Thyme Out” restaurant and the farm shop at Poplar Nurseries as well as the staff who work in the garden centre.
An indication of what was grown last year:
- Tomatoes – Cherry, plum, Beefsteak type and a range of other popular tomato varieties.
- Sweet Peppers
- Chilli Peppers
- Marrow and courgette and zuchini
- Runner beans
- 8 varieties of potato
- White and red onion
- Spring onion
- Brussel sprouts
- Cabbage, Kale and lettuces
- Wide range of herbs including Fennel,Thyme and Mint
