Watering

Most of us forget that it is the watering that has made the difference.

Being hands on in the garden can be very rewarding whether that’s planting seedlings in the flower beds, nurturing a sick plant back to health or growing prize winning dahlia. Most of us however, forget that it is the watering that has made the difference.

From many years experience of growing and selling plants at Poplar Nurseries, we know that watering is possibly the most important and tricky job for any gardener to get right.  There are the occasional times when plants are killed through kindness, of too much water being given, but generally most plant failings come as a result of not enough water being provided, particularly with new plantings and during the warmer summer and autumn months.

Another problem time is when you want to take a break from everything and go away on a well deserved holiday.  There are solutions, either ask a neighbor to water your cherished garden and plants as best they can, or invest in a programmable irrigation system that, with a little planning and fitting, will water everything from your flower beds to your hanging baskets, tubs and containers.

At Poplar Nurseries we stock of a wide range of Hozelock products, micro irrigation systems from Gardena a broad selection of water butts from Stewart Plastics and watring cans from Haws.

BEAT THE HOZE PIPE BAN

ENFORCED 5th APRIL 2012

Helpful Tips:

1. Make the most of the rain when we do get some and collect it in a water butt so it's there ready for when you need it.  Use a Hozelock Water Butt Pump
R.R.P. £119.99      OUR PRICE: 69.99
Pump water easily from your water butt to the desired area of your garden via your hozepipe.

2. Use water gel when planting. These use crystals that swell up and retain water in the soil, allowing you to water less often. Ideal for tubs and hanging baskets.

3. Use West+ container and basket compost which requires 50% less watering and also contains added fertilizer. 60l £5.99 each or 2 for £10.

4. Use a watering can to water your garden as they are not included in the ban.

5. Fit a Hozelock Deluxe Autokit (water timer & pressure reducer permitted under Anglian Water Authority guidelines).
R.R.P. £118.99    OUR PRICE: £49.99
Twenty pot automatic watering kit - uses a water timer computer and pressure reducer and compared to a watering can, uses 90% less water.  Can easily be extended to water your whole garden including borders, tubs and baskets.

6. Mulch your borders with bark to help the soil retain more moisture and loose less to evaporation during the day.

7. When choosing plants for the garden consider planting some drought tolerant varieties to cut down the amount you have to water.
