City and modern gardens are getting ever smaller as space is at a premium…but that does not mean they cannot be stunning. From vertical planters to fold-away seating and magical mirrors, with a little bit of TLC, small can definitely be beautiful. Here are some simple tips for creating amazing small gardens.
On the Up
Hanging baskets and wall-mounted plant pots are perfect for small gardens as they add colour and greenery without taking up valuable ground space. Climbing plants such as wisteria, roses, and clematis can be planted in pots and grow upwards to inject an impactful blast of colour. Ladders have become popular as rustic plant shelves which can be stacked with terracotta pots filled with herbs and flowers. A pergola can also work well in providing somewhere for plants to grow without taking up too much precious ground space.
Art for Art’s Sake
Painting a garden wall white will make the space feel bigger and brighter. It also provides a classy background to the garden and helps to reflect sunlight. Garden mirrors can also be an attractive addition and help to create a great sense of space to give the impression of being surrounded by blooms. Artwork and ceramics can also add interest and style in a compact and exciting way.
Secret Storage
Everything in a small garden must earn its place but by careful planning, some elements can have a double use. For example, you can create seating which can also serve as storage space for garden tools and the like while still being attractive and functional.
Levelling Up
Adding different levels to your garden will create space and an exciting aspect to your small but dynamic space. Shelves and raised beds mean you can plant flowers, herbs, or even vegetables upwards in steps rather than along the ground.
Sitting Comfortably
You may not have room for a full lounge set but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy dining alfresco in a small patio garden. Choose a bistro-style table and fold-away chairs and enjoy intimate dining until the small hours.
Shine a Light
Hanging festoon lights on the wall or setting up solar lights, lanterns, or stake lights can illuminate even the smallest garden. You can also put tea lights into jars and position them around the garden for that extra touch of magic.
