Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, bird food can definitely go bad especially when it is exposed to moisture, heat or pests which can lead to mould, bacteria and rancidity which can make birds sick. Make sure you store the food properly to keep it in good condition. Use airtight, watertight containers which should be kept in a cool, dry, dark place.
Offer a variety of fresh foods such as black oil sunflower seeds, suet, fresh fruit and mealworms to attract a variety of birds. You should also provide clean water in a bird bath and place feeders near shelter and away from potential predators.
Firstly, empty the old water and debris out of the bird bath and then scrub the basin with a solution of one part white vinegar to nine parts water or a mild dish soap and water. A stiff brush is good for scrubbing and after cleaning, make sure you thoroughly rinse the bath with fresh water. Let is air dry and refill it with clean water.
Pigeons can be greedy and you don’t want them eating all your bird food leaving other species to go hungry. Use physical barriers like mesh cages or spikes to deter them from a bird table and offer foods which are less appealing to pigeons such as sunflower hearts and nyjer. Another option is using weight-activated feeders which close for heavier birds.
Ideally, a bird table should be between four and six feet high - 1.2 to 1.8 meters - to protect birds from predators like cats and to offer safety. Placing it at this height helps deter ground-based predators while larger birds may prefer to feed closer to the ground.
