The Halloween custom began with the ancient Celtic fetival of Samhain, during which individuals would ignite bonfires and don costumes to repel spirits. In the 8th century Pope Gregory III established November the 1st as a day to commemorate all saints. Before long, All Saints Day absorbed various traditions from Samhain.
In Britain Halloween has been traditionally observed through children's activities like bobbing for apples in water-filled containers, sharing ghost stories and carving faces into hollowed-out vegetables such as swedes and turnips These carved faces were typically lit from inside with a candle and the lanterns were placed on windowsills to repel any malevolent spirits. The contemporary practice of using pumpkins is a relatively recent adaptation brought over from the United States and we can also thank America for the charming "Trick or Treat" custom.
