Sonya's Travels

Our Houseplant Manager Sonya is always searching for knowledge and inspiration on her days off from Poplar. She has visited many places of interest around the country this year including RHS shows, National trust gardens even other Garden Centres because she is passionate about her job and loves bringing information and good ideas back for our customers. The top banner image is from Sonya’s visit to Great Dixter, family home of gardener and gardening writer Christopher Lloyd.

Sonya recently spent a day at Perch Hill with Sarah Raven and Liz Earle. Liz covered health and well being which is another of Sonya’s passions. Sarah did a flower arranging demonstration and also showed what to do now in the garden with flowers, bulbs and vegetables.

Sonya also orders our spring and summer bulbs, so was particularly interested in a section devoted to up and coming trends here in the UK and across the pond in America. When Sonya returned from her travels she was full of enthusiasm for all she had seen and commented: “Deep, dark sumptuous tulips have been on trend over the last few years and are still very popular – ‘Paul Scherer’, ‘Havran’ and ‘Queen of the Night’ to name just a few. What we are seeing in tulips and Dahlias now is a very romantic soft look with warm, gentle pinks, peaches and off whites. Types of flowers are changing as well with big Peony and double flowers becoming very popular. Imagine those old still life paintings of flowers and fruit, large loose bouquets with maybe a few petals falling onto the table – that’s the big, blousy and beautiful look that’s filtering it’s way through to us now and will probably influence what we buy in the future. However, that said, we will always make sure we have a good selection of spring and summer bulbs for everybody’s taste. Our team at Poplar Nurseries strive to bring the best service to our customers and hope to offer inspiration – we love what we do and feel privileged to pass on any useful information we find. Happy gardening!”
