For food lovers across Essex and Suffolk, the Poplar Nurseries Food Hall has become a go‑to destination for fresh, local and artisan produce. Since opening in 2021, we’ve recently celebrated five years of operating, though our foodie story began long before that. Preceding the food hall was our farm shop which opened in 2010. From the beginning, we focused on selecting the best local producers from Colchester and the surrounding areas, whilst also baking a range of goods in house. Fast forward to 2026, we’re extremely proud to announce that Poplar Nurseries Food Hall has been voted as one of the Top 10 Food Halls in Britain by the Speciality Food Magazine's Artisan Essentials edition!

Having just turned 5 years old last month, we’d like to take a moment to thank all of our customers, team members & suppliers who’ve helped shape the food hall into the place it is today! At over 3000 sq ft, our range is wonderfully expansive - from homemade cakes & pastries, to local fruit & veg, plus a wide range of free from (vegan and gluten free) goodies too! Whether you’re popping in to pick up the essentials, treating yourself to a slice of something sweet, or hunting down an item you just can’t get in the supermarket, we’re proud to be part of everyday moments.
Our dedicated chefs, Amanda and Lynne, lovingly curate the food you know and love, while Mandy has a flair for sourcing some of the very best from both near and afar. And it’s not just food… With extensive selections of local beers, wines and spirits from across East Anglia, through to specialities from across the world we’re proudly stocking some rather marvellous tipples. After all, good food (and drinks) brings good people together - it’s an ethos we champion. It sparks conversation, creates connection and can turn everyday moments into warm memories.

Food is at its very best when it’s seasonal, and it’s something we have always celebrated. From the berries of Summer, through to the root veg which carries us through the colder months, our shelves change as the year progresses. By embracing seasonal offerings, we are able to bring fresher food, packed full of flavour.
As we look ahead, we’re excited to keep on expanding, welcoming new producers on board, and extending relationships with our current ones. Growth, to us, however, isn’t simply adding more products to the shelf. It’s about continuing to build a space rooted within the community which feels personal. Had you asked us in 2010 where we hoped this venture would lead, we could have only wished for a space like this.
