Bred by the Scottish Crop Research Institute, Big Ben blackcurrant bushes for sale in Colchester, Essex, are an outstanding early season variety with many excellent qualities. Its main standout feature is that it produces enormous blackcurrants – two to three times the size of other varieties. Developed especially for the fresh market, the fruit has a soft shiny skin and is extremely sweet – particularly so when eaten straight from the bush. Fruiting season is July. The bush’s height is typically around 1.5 metres.
Blackcurrants are easy to grow and if you are short on space they can even be grown in containers. They prefer well drained moisture retentive soil that is in full sun, but will tolerate some light shade.
Delicious tart-flavoured dark purple berries that are rich in vitamin C appear in mid-summer that can used to make pies and jams.
