How and when should I plant fruit trees?
The best time to plant bare-root fruit trees, such as apple or plum, is between late October and March, ensuring they establish strong roots before the growing season begins. Proper soil preparation is essential, to ensure good drainage and enough space for the tree to thrive. If you’re planting a container-grown fruit tree, this can be done from mid-August to the end of May, but it’s important to protect young trees from frost. With the right care and conditions, your fruit trees will flourish and provide delicious homegrown harvests for years to come.

When and how should I prune fruit trees?
For healthy, vigorous growth in your apple, pear, and quince trees, winter pruning is highly recommended. Make a clean cut about half a centimetre above a bud to encourage strong new growth. If you prefer to limit your tree’s growth, pruning in spring or summer is ideal. It’s best to avoid pruning in autumn, as your tree is preparing for winter dormancy at this time.
